SOUTH BUFFALO LIGHTHOUSE (1903)
Buffalo South Entrance South Side Light

The opening of a massive steel plant in Lackawanna at the southern end of the harbor triggered completion of the main breakwater and a new Stony Point breakwater, leaving a gap in between for a new South Entrance to the harbor and the new ore docks. On a stone crib attached to that breakwater, the Lighthouse Service erected the Buffalo South Entrance South Side Light, most often just called the South Buffalo Light.
First lit in 1903 on a pier extending into the lake, the South Buffalo now is owned by the Buffalo Lighthouse Association and is backed by extensive landfill. It went dark in 1963, replaced by a pole light on the foundation crib. Restoration is under way. and the station has served as a set for two movies. The light station, with its historically important fog signal testing building, can be viewed from the Tifft Street Pier.
